Pickleball Skill Levels and DUPR Ratings Explained

A skill level (2.0 to 5.5+) describes what a player can do, and you can rate yourself with USA Pickleball's self-assessment. A DUPR rating (2.000 to 8.000) comes from your match results instead. In December 2025, USA Pickleball announced DUPR as the official rating for its own events, and many clubs and tournaments use it to sort players.
Two different numbers
People say “I’m a 3.5” and mean one of two things:
- A skill level describes what you can do: how steady your shots are, whether you can dink, how well you move with a partner. USA Pickleball publishes descriptions for each level and a short self-assessment (12 questions, a few minutes). Its descriptions aren’t an official rating; they’re a guide for placing yourself.
- A rating comes from results: who you played, and how many points you won against what was expected. DUPR is the one most players in the US now have.
A club night might ask for your skill level. A tournament division will usually go by your rating.
The skill levels
In our own words, following USA Pickleball’s descriptions:
| Level | Roughly |
|---|---|
| 2.0–2.5 Beginner | New to the game; can keep a short rally going with players of the same level, without much control of direction. |
| 3.0 Advanced beginner | Gets serves and returns in reliably; developing the drop shot and moving up to the kitchen line when there’s a chance. |
| 3.5 Intermediate | Hits with depth and control, places most serves and returns, and moves as a team with a partner. |
| 4.0 Advanced intermediate | Comfortable at the kitchen line, with third shots that are hard to attack and few unforced errors. |
| 4.5 Advanced | Hits every shot well from both sides, has mastered the dink and drop, and changes strategy to suit the match. |
| 5.0 Expert | Tournament results show the level: consistent at a high level against strong players. |
| 5.5+ Expert pro | The top of the scale. |
Be honest with yourself. Sign up a level too high and the games are no fun for anyone, you included.
How a DUPR rating works
- The scale runs from 2.000 to 8.000. New players start as NR (not rated) until they have results.
- Every match has an expected result, worked out from everyone’s ratings. Score more points than expected and your rating goes up, even in a loss; score fewer and it goes down. So the margin matters, not just the win.
- Recent matches count more than old ones, and the more you play, the more reliable the rating.
- Verified matches (club, league and tournament) weigh more than matches you post yourself, though self-posted recreational games still count.
- You get separate ratings for singles and doubles, and for mixed doubles.
Ratings and USA Pickleball
In December 2025, USA Pickleball and DUPR announced DUPR as the official, exclusive rating for events USA Pickleball owns, including its Golden Ticket qualifiers. Other tournaments and clubs choose their own system, so check the entry page for which rating a division goes by.
Sorting a group by level
For a club night or a mixed group, put players of a similar level together, then let the round-robin generator rotate partners so everyone plays with everyone.
